Does domain age affect Google ranking?

Google has publicly said domain age is not a direct ranking factor. However, older domains have had time to accumulate the signals that ARE ranking factors — backlinks, brand mentions, user behavior data, content depth. In practice: age correlates with rankings, but through other mechanisms. A brand-new site with strong backlinks can outrank an old dormant domain.
